chromeos

Just recently, as the tech world surprisingly saw the launched of Google’s newest product, Chrome OS, everybody thinks that Google is slowly widening its services as it now offers operating system service for its users. Competitors are threatened with the fact that Google is using its popularity to gain more power on other services that they are trying nowadays.

But taking the words from Walid Abu-Hadba, Microsoft’s Vice President for Developer and Platform Evangelism, Google’s steps towards operating system is actually a strategy to threatened other competitors to do their best on existing products.

Google also released its mobile operating system Android and now, they are really venturing into operating system business with the release of Chrome OS. But with these products, Google is just playing defensively to protect its leading name on search engine category, putting its competitors into action to follow their moves and explore on new things. Thus, leaving behind what’s their initial business is.

Google executives claim that they just want computing more faster and simpler with the use of all Google products and services. Another technology writer thought that it could be Google’s way of toppling Microsoft’s dominance in the business. But these things are not factual in reality.

Studying Google’s ways in the past projects it launched, it’s evident that they are playing in the business. Launching new products will make competitors look on these products and try to do something on matching them. With this kind of strategy, Google is silently protecting its biggest share with search engine while exploring the avenue on other services that they could offer and that would be popular to users.

Though Google was also threatened with Bing’s growing traffic, Microsoft is guessing that providing the internet market a variety of choices with various services will make them still on the lead and popular.

google-os

The recently released Google-based operating system – Chrome OS made a promising start in the industry. Though Google has a lot of struggles in promoting the Chrome OS, they are all optimistic that Chrome OS will be popular to users.

Google Chrome OS came to finalized some marketing strategies including plans of installing the operating system on smaller versions of laptops – the netbooks. This idea is set to be done next year to popularized the newest Google product.

Though Google experienced the gradual slow down of revenues coming from online advertising, Chrome OS is surely a burden to the company if they haven’t got the lead on other aspects of their business. But one thing is for sure, Google is still in the business.

Forming the best strategies to still grab the lead in the market, Google is acquiring other assets where they could directly move forward and gain something. Since it’s harder for them to gain more from the recent released operating system, they would be getting more money from the recently acquired assets including Double-Click, a display-ad company. Google is still forecasting that the revenue will be coming from advertising.

YouTube, one of Google-acquired assets, is also making money that’s the company is still positive that they could still maintain the lead in the market.

The initial strategy of providing Chrome OS to netbooks will surely be a hit in the coming year, making it a popular OS even to millions of PC users.

Should Twitter Posts be Indexed?

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Recent news sprung up regarding the inclusion of tweets in Bing search. It sparked a lot of conversation among the crowd because it triggered the question of the importance of instant popular sentiment. Is it really that important to be indexed or is Bing just crafting some stuff to generate some buzz on the top social media site?

First, let us take a look at the nature of tweets. It is sent in an instant to explain what an individual is currently doing or feeling. Following that, it is true that it can generate a trend on what the people are thinking about or the things they are into. It can then provide niche researchers some good information.

But what about ordinary tweets as sources of information? For example, if I talk about cake in my tweet like “My mom baked an amazing cake for my birthday”, is this actually beneficial to the person who is actually searching for information on cakes. Just imagine. You will only type the word “cake” if one, you are interested to learn how to make it or if you want to buy it. Well, there may be the third option that you are just searching for the term just for fun but the tweet will not be helpful to any party.

My concern here is how Bing will filter through tweets to trigger the most important ones and those that do not matter at all. After all, the goal of search is to bring the most relevant web pages in the results. If Bing will just turn out to be a Twitter search engine, then it will just suck.

How to Rank in Bing

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

There was a huge noise on the internet when Microsoft released its latest search engine that is thought to rival Google’s skill of indexing: Bing. In fact there are lots of reports that Bing can quickly pick up certain websites that Google may ignore. But whatever it may do to the traffic and conversions of a particular website, Bing is another money well that one should discover.

But the first step is, of course, ranking in Bing. How do you do it you ask? Here is how.

Keep it Simple

Some sites may have very complex structures. There are those which have complex designs and scripts. This is not very Bing-friendly. You must keep all HTML simple and easy to pick-up. That will go with links as well. It is always better to keep things static.

Submit to Bing

There is no easier way to get rank in Bing than by simply informing them that your website exists. And since the website is pretty new, pickup is pretty quick. So did you think that there is a complex algorithm you have to follow? Not with Bing.

Allow MSNBot

As with other bots, be sure to have your Robots.txt file allow MSNBot. If not, then you will not be indexed for they cannot crawl your site. Simple as that.

Web 2.0 as the One Millionth Word

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

It was only on last June 10, 2009 when the Global Language Monitor declared “Web 2.0” as the one millionth word in the English language. While it is a term popularizes by Tim O’Reilly and John Battelle in their conferences, it is now used by mass audiences as a common term.

It triggered lots of noise since the term is pretty much related to social media and the evolution of the internet. I guess it is a way for the Language Monitor to gain some publicity since they will be targeting mass amounts of internet users by the sheer declaration. But just for the record, the word “Noob” is the 999,998th word. But it is not half as great as the word “Web 2.0”

Twitter Privacy Issue

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Privacy has always been a normal topic when we talk about Twitter. It was not so long ago when another social updating website called BrightKite is featured in Oprah because of its location targeting issues. Since anyone can track where a person is currently at, that person is prone to different types of crimes which may include kidnapping and stalking.

But then Twitter seemed to have the same problems. With it, people will know what you are doing and where you are just by simply looking at your updates. This makes your life less private.

But then we should start to question if Twitter really is a threat to a person’s privacy. The difference is it is not like a video camera that tracks people wherever they go. The information is disclosed with the consent of the person.

In fact, some people may portray their lives differently than what they really are. But this is another issue and it concerns fakers. Some may even imitate popular celebrities which is the reason why some celebs have filed cases against social media websites.

The thing is, you can choose the information you will disclose. Given this, privacy is not really an issue. A person is only going to disclose information that he likes the people to know publicly. In my opinion, Twitter is more focused on information than location. So robberies and other things are outside of the realm of concern except for those in the individual’s inner circle of friends.
