How One Business Learns How Powerful Social Sites Are

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Business is business after all. And as establishments are pushing for a more stable community online, marketing analysts of various businesses are promoting their own products and services online with their consumers signing up, following up on Facebook or Twitter and other social media sites.

And to continue making their online consumer community as much as possible a concrete community of loyal users, these establishments are using these social sites to market promotions and discounts. However, it’s a fail that some are not yet aware of the powerful capacity of social sites to gather people.

Baja Fresh Mexican Grill recently got problems with the promotion they take hold on Facebook as they offer a free burrito with the regular purchase of a regular-size drink. This promotion generated 50,000 takers. Unfortunately, Baja Fresh wasn’t able to accommodate the number of consumers who participated in the promotion.

With a number of consumers overreacting on the service they got from the promotion, Baja Fresh released their post-promotion press release acknowledging the people who made the promotion a success and apologizing for whatever it provided them unsatisfied service.

The company said that they will continue market Baja Fresh to all the followers on Twitters and fans on Facebook and will take the experience a learning memory for their company.

Google creates a community within its iGoogle through the recently launched ‘social gadgets’ in Australia. The service is said to be built on the Open Social platform.

Google somewhat copied the power of Facebook and Twitter as the new IGoogle ‘social gadgets’ have similar applications with the two hit social networks in the world.

Today, there are 12 social gadgets available. Third party developers made eight of these social gadgets. We all know that casual games became a huge hit in Facebook. This maybe practically the reason why there are more casual gadgets developed for iGoogle. Picasa and Flickr are also part of the gadgets as the photo sharing apps while a to-dos gadget is now included in the first set of the social gadgets available. A Twitter-like app, which is tagged as ‘Timeline’, will provide iGoogle’s users the environment of being in a social site.

Facebook connects with Android

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Good news to all Facebook addicts and Android users! Now, it has come to the tech world news that the two companies – Facebook and Google – are joining together to bring the first Facebook page running in Android!

Yes, you read it right! Though the two companies are yet to confirm in their separate official statements, there are series of leaked screenshots of experiments conducted for Android for its Facebook page availability.

Perhaps, Facebook’s decision to integrate their own Android app is due to the ever growing number of Android phones and the users that are hooked to it. If ever that this will push through and will be officially launched, this will make both companies’s users more comfortable in using the platform rather than exchanging handsets due to incompatibility.

Twitter, Facebook encounter ‘Attacks’

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

If you happen to experience a down time from Twitter and Facebook last Thursday, August 6, 2009, then this is the primary cause – DDoS attack!

The distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack targeted Twitter to make it unavailable to certain users or customers. DDoS is a malicious effort commonly used to disrupt services in online banks, credit card payment gateways and other money-oriented online sites.

Twitter has grown a lot in years and is now currently used for marketing purposes. The DDoS attack may have certain purpose that reports say that are still in investigation for the real intention. Its Facebook attack also says that the intention merely wanted to stop the current service for particular users of the site.

Up to now, both Twitter and Facebook were able to normalize the sites after hours of being down but were continuously in search for the intention of the DDoS attack for it not to happen again.

Facebook allows Username Change

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

With Facebook’s announcement on June this year that they are allowing its users to get vanity URLs for their accounts instead of that birth numbers, they also added that it will be permanent and will never be altered.

The policy back then was strict not until July 23, 2009, Thursday, when Facebook included on its site an option on its account setting giving its users the second chance to change their usernames. The option can only be used once, so it’s just a second chance for all who’ve tried the vanity URLs but failed to get the right name.

There are a lot of factors affected Facebook’s decision to soften the policy regarding vanity URLs including those who have mistakenly misspelled their names during registration. Also, there are reports saying that users jokingly provide names on their accounts therefore getting some negative feedbacks on job prospects and other important stuff.

With this new policy, everybody gets to enjoy Facebook’s services while getting the right name for your account.

Yahoo! recently announced its series of upgrades conducted to Delicious giving it new features that users will surely love! Today, Delicious’s service is more relevant and useful!

From now on, all online marketers and those involved in SEOs will appreciate more being bookmarked with Delicious ‘Popular’ page. Even regular users will surely appreciate the new upgrades on Delicious.

Today, Delicious provides a new take on bookmarks with new sharing features and improved functions on searching. It has the Twitter-based Fresh Bookmarks where you can find the number related Tweets on a particular bookmarked page. This replaces the older version of the ‘Popular Bookmarks’ which is the default page of Delicious.

Though the new home page is much more effective, this could also be the reason why some users may opt to use the older version since they are used in using the service. But this is not possible. Hopefully, Delicious will take this into consideration. They could put additional option to users to choose between the new homepage and the older one.

MySpace to be repositioned in Video Games

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

MySpace, the second largest social network in the world after Facebook, is said to be the home of video games in the cyber world in the future, according to reports.

Plans are being laid out to reposition the social networking site as an entertainment destination focussed on online video gaming. According to Jonathan Miller, MySpace’s chief digital officer, the site can be a good ground to launch their video game suppliers’ products and develop these games.

MySpace’s future is being seen as a social site where people can meet and play games. This entertainment drive is doubtful according to some analysts though the focus in gaming would be an advantage over other social sites gearing entertainment such as YouTube.

Compared to current competitor, MySpace has a portal on its site to cater for video games while a variety of casual games is available over Facebook for its users.
