Obama praising Google, Twitter, Facebook, iPhone but not Xbox

Monday, December 14th, 2009

President Barack Obama’s words in his recent speech to the school children in the United States didn’t seemed to be controversial especially to the tech companies and/or products mentioned to the new generation. Perhaps, there are good things being said and indirectly quoting a gadget for bad side.

Quoting from his prepared speech, President Obama said ‘I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with that Xbox.’ This gives negative impressions to Microsoft.

All other companies got praises as Obama quoted saying ‘Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war; who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon. Students who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google, Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other.’

Obama also quoted for positive remarks for Apple’s iPhone ‘Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor – maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or a new medicine or vaccine.’

Looking on a brighter side, Microsoft should still be proud as Xbox will not be mentioned if it’s value is not marketable giving users the desire to buy for it.

Facebook to tag Friends on Status Updates like Twitter

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Another Twitter-like service is going to be rolled out on Facebook.

The continuing battle between Facebook and Twitter led the first to imitate another feature from the latter. This time, the use of the ‘@’ sign to tag member friends.

Although it has been an amazing feature for a social networking site to tag friends thus notifying them about an uploaded picture, video or note, the latest with Facebook allows its users to update their statuses at the same time tag their friends on it by using the ‘@’ sign.

Like any of the first tagging features of Facebook that sends notification to tagged friends, tagging individuals on their statuses through ‘@’ sign also sends notification to that particular person. You too can receive notifications once you were tagged on your friends’ updates using the same symbol.

According to Facebook, the immediate advantage of the new service will directly affect brands or businesses who are also engaged into their social networking page in Facebook.

This plan of tagging friends through their updates will be available in the coming weeks.

Facebook versus Canadian Privacy Law

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

The world’s most famous social site is facing criticism in Canada. Facebook, being the most successful networking website that provides various features for its users to enjoy such as millions of applications, faces the Canadian Law – the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.

The investigation came upon request last year after a group from the University of Ottawa called The Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic to look of Facebook’s privacy policies.

Anne-Marie Hayden, spokesperson for Canada’s privacy commission, said that Facebook was doing something to address this concern upon request of the Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart to the company to submit proposal and timeline regarding their policies.

The five-year-old Canadian act affects Facebook’s almost 12 million users from Canada since the company keeps user’s personal information indefinitely, even if they closed their accounts on the said website.

To address the said problems, Stoddart suggested that Facebook should clarify its privacy policies, to make it easier for Canadian users to remove their profiles and to curb the amount of personal information that Facebook collects from its users. Giving the company a 30-day period to implement the suggestions, Facebook said that in order not to face the same liabilities in the future, they will also introduce a number of new features addressing privacy concerns.

Facebook starts New Search Rollout

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Facebook seems to find out that there’s a need for their site’s search tab to be improved. Yes, the leading social networking site’s search tab is too lousy for it only provides limited options. Though in the beginning, this is not really a subject to be improved on Facebook’s site but as the site’s growing number of users and applications, expansion of its services should also be taken care of.

Last August 10, 2009, Facebook said that they are going to roll out Facebook Search to all of its users. Previously, it was announced that this will be randomly selected to its users for some testing. But now, Facebook explained on its blog that from now on, users can look for their friends and their own status updates, photos, links, videos and notes for the past 30 days. This is also applicable to subjects you wanted to search on your Facebook pages which you’re a fan. For those who decided to provide their contents available to public, users can also access for those. Also, people’s profiles and related Facebook Pages, groups and applications will still be part of the search results.

FriendFeed is now with Facebook

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

To continue dominate the world of social networking, Facebook is looking for some areas where they could maintain its stability. This is primary the reason why Facebook tried buying the popular micro-blogging tool Twitter which remarkably becoming their company to compete over MySpace. Unfortunately, Twitter rejected the offer.

But trying their luck with similar tool, FriendFeed agreed to Facebook thus, taking 12 of its employees to join Facebook and FriendFeed’s four founders to take ‘senior roles on Facebook’s engineering and product teams.’

Though Facebook is becoming a Twitter-like recently, both companies who are competing for social site supremacy are still different in many ways.

The Facebook’s acquisition of FriendFeed will certainly make the first find more stability on its current status as the world’s most used networking site.

Facebook to Earn more Dollars

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Facebook is planning to provide more dollar-earning projects within their own social networking site. Aside from the regular ads users can see on its site, there will be contextually targeted ads. This will be presented to the advertisers.

Of course, Facebook is well-positioned to do these aggressive advertisement. With its millions of users who spend a lot of time in the site, placing contextual ads will be a good step to earn dollars with these users.

Facebook is also concerned with the cookies and other spams that would affect its users that’s why they will continue to test every project before releasing it to everybody.

The targeted market will be based on the member’s profiles themselves. This will be based with the user’s status updates, fan pages and other related pages where advertisers can put their contextual ads.

Facebook connects with Android

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Good news to all Facebook addicts and Android users! Now, it has come to the tech world news that the two companies – Facebook and Google – are joining together to bring the first Facebook page running in Android!

Yes, you read it right! Though the two companies are yet to confirm in their separate official statements, there are series of leaked screenshots of experiments conducted for Android for its Facebook page availability.

Perhaps, Facebook’s decision to integrate their own Android app is due to the ever growing number of Android phones and the users that are hooked to it. If ever that this will push through and will be officially launched, this will make both companies’s users more comfortable in using the platform rather than exchanging handsets due to incompatibility.

Twitter, Facebook encounter ‘Attacks’

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

If you happen to experience a down time from Twitter and Facebook last Thursday, August 6, 2009, then this is the primary cause – DDoS attack!

The distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack targeted Twitter to make it unavailable to certain users or customers. DDoS is a malicious effort commonly used to disrupt services in online banks, credit card payment gateways and other money-oriented online sites.

Twitter has grown a lot in years and is now currently used for marketing purposes. The DDoS attack may have certain purpose that reports say that are still in investigation for the real intention. Its Facebook attack also says that the intention merely wanted to stop the current service for particular users of the site.

Up to now, both Twitter and Facebook were able to normalize the sites after hours of being down but were continuously in search for the intention of the DDoS attack for it not to happen again.

Facebook allows Username Change

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

With Facebook’s announcement on June this year that they are allowing its users to get vanity URLs for their accounts instead of that birth numbers, they also added that it will be permanent and will never be altered.

The policy back then was strict not until July 23, 2009, Thursday, when Facebook included on its site an option on its account setting giving its users the second chance to change their usernames. The option can only be used once, so it’s just a second chance for all who’ve tried the vanity URLs but failed to get the right name.

There are a lot of factors affected Facebook’s decision to soften the policy regarding vanity URLs including those who have mistakenly misspelled their names during registration. Also, there are reports saying that users jokingly provide names on their accounts therefore getting some negative feedbacks on job prospects and other important stuff.

With this new policy, everybody gets to enjoy Facebook’s services while getting the right name for your account.
