AOL closes offices
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010AOL allows Users to Opt Out Ads in Email
Monday, October 5th, 2009AOL, after being faced with two lawsuits regarding their email ad violations, agreed to donate $100,000 to charity. In addition to this, AOL also agreed to inform their members – both paid subscribers and those who are using their services for free – on how to opt out the ads on the footer of the email.
The settlement is still pending but if approved, this will address the two lawsuits filed against AOL – the first one regarding the misleading and confusing footer ads and the other one is regarding the same ads violating a federal privacy law.
The controversial footer ads started when AOL decided to insert these ads more than three years ago. Though in April 2008, AOL allowed paying subscribers to opt out these ads, the company failed to reach their members to tell about this news.
This year, around July, AOL changed its policy to give all their users the freedom to opt out the ads to provide great consumer experiences to their customers which includes the email.
AOL sues Advertise.com
Friday, August 28th, 2009For fairness in business legalities, AOL sued its rival company Advertise.com for infringing rights for the sites Advertising.com and Ad.com.
According to the papers filed at the federal district court in Virginia, AOL says that its rival confuses customers for the site’s name Advertise.com as they might think that this affiliated with the AOL brands Advertising.com and Ad.com.
Though AOL may have the point in suing Advertise.com, the name is still generic to be trademarked. This is the defence of Advertise.com on its lawsuit filed against AOL in California.
But to AOL, if the generic defense of Advertise.com will win their lawsuit, their logo will still continue the battle as Advertise.com has similar logo with that of AOL brands.
AOL to launch AOL Advertising
Wednesday, August 5th, 2009AOL is still struggling in the business but still alive to make the changes in the company.
AOL’s advertising units, its third-party ad network and ad-serving operations, will be named AOL Advertising this September said in an announcement made last Friday, July 24, 2009. The sudden change was done after hearing some points from advertisers, marketers and agencies.
With this decision, AOL believed that by harnessing their brand, this will help AOL better in conveying the company’s capacity and capabilities in the field of advertising.
AOL Media will be launched as an independent company, says reports. This way, they are offering premium consumer offerings, from content to products, to the advertisers.
Though this May, AOL just fired 50 of its staff from sales to marketing men which are mostly from Platform-A, AOL just said in reports that they are just going through a massive change.
AOL’s executive plan revealed
Sunday, July 26th, 2009
AOL is still in the business. And with the hands of its current CEO Tim Armstrong who took the post in April, everything is still in good hands.
Armstrong initially planned a 100-day meet ups with AOL employees to formulate good strategies on how to save the company and of course still continue in the business. Meetings will be focused on how the company will strive to grow in the coming years and eventually make it to the top.
But six days prior to the completion of the 100-day planned meetings, Tim canceled the succeeding meet ups for the executives already come up with the strategy that they could apply for the company. Though the initial plan was not completed, this is somehow a good step not to waste the remaining days brainstorming.
AOL, as the strategy goes, will focus on the following priorities: focusing on the growth of AOL mini-brands by acquiring new assets and hiring new people (The MediaGlow content business), targeting on premium advertising to be sold to big brands and adding more Google-like self-service ads for direct marketers and smaller businesses (The Platform-A/Ad.com business), getting big deals to attract local advertising market including Patch, a community news network, Going.com, a local events site and MapQuest (Local advertising/content), and the use of AIM, email and ICQ (Communication products).
AOL is also set to launch AOL Ventures, a division in the company to stick businesses it wants to sell off.
